Sportpesa has on Friday, cancel all the sport sponsorship in the country following collapsed business locally due to regulator’s punitive measures.
“We regrettably wish to announce that due to the uncertainty of this situation SportPesa will be canceling sports sponsorships effective immediately. All clubs and partners will have received notices as provided for in their contracts.” Statement from Sportpesa read.
“We greatly value our partnerships and we will endeavor to resume support to the best of our ability when the business recovers,” the firm further added.
The firm said that the government has subjected them to tough regulations including delayed in renewing their license and scrabbing of their Paybills numbers which they said to have negatively impacted on their businesses.
This comes a few weeks before the start of the Kenya Premier League. Most affected clubs include Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.
Sportpesa also sponsors boxer Fatuma Zarika as well as the Football Kenya Federation Shield.
The firm further said that despite having existing court orders, the regulator has failed to respect.
Sportpesa has promised to support the sports again when they resume business.
